I have used Cisco products in the past and being familiar with the older ASA platform decided to give the new FP firewall a try. Seems like a decent enough firewall, however if you need remote access VPN, DO NOT BUY THIS FIREWALL unless you are prepared to drop a bundle of cash on AnyConnect licenses. I havent tried it myself but I guess the Fortiwifi 60E would be a good starting point. Entry level device that should tick most boxes, however I have not actually tested the wifi on it. You do not need any special license for sslvpn, only the UTM features requires a license. If this is for business and the business will be supporting this home user.. I've been working with Fortinet tech support on a FWF-50E that hard locks every time I take it home and use it on my home network.

I live in a small condo so I don't need a ton of coverage, just enough to support full throughput for my laptop/streaming devices. I have been doing some reading here and most people say the built-in WIFI is terrible and it's better to go with an external AP. I also have some devices that only support 2.5GHZ connectivity so I would need something that accepts both 2.5/5GHz. Remember, when someone pays for a high speed connection - they usually expect that. The fact is, Fortinet doesn't have any low cost, lower end devices capable of running on a 1Gb connection with all of the UTM features enabled.

I am using a virtual Fortigate and I was wondering if it was possible to set it up to be my main source to the internet. I have a cable modem currently connected to a physical router supplied by my ISP. Is there a way to trick the foritgate to using all main functions and just merely use my regular router as a means to connect to the internet?
The new 30E will pull 150Mbps, that's an improvement over the abysmal 30D and 60D units but not where we need to be yet. Don't mess-around with unsupported and unfamiliar equipment. Have you considered deploying only a remote Forti-AP and no FGT at all? Will create a tunnel to the HQ FGT and all traffic will traverse it .
